Career Spotlight – Dan Martin

What is your name?

Dan Martin

What is your occupation?

I am a Director and Independent Financial Adviser of my family financial planning business, MDM Wealth.

Where do you live?

Rugby, the home of the game.

When did you start your career in finance? How did you get into it?

It started 2 weeks after my last university exam. I had a job offer to join a wealth management grad programme at a big midlands firm, but after discussing the opportunity and where I wanted to be, I decided to join my Dad in his small IFA firm. I planned to be a financial adviser before starting university so that was always the goal. Although I must admit, before university I was a little lost like most 18 year olds.

If you could start your business again, what would you do differently?

Start setting it up sooner.

What would be your biggest piece of advice to someone coming into the financial planning profession?

Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

How would you define your personal mission?

To help more people confidently enjoy today, and plan responsibly for tomorrow.

How would you define your personal vision?

As above.

How would you define your personal values?

This is something I have thought about a lot recently. When reflecting on it, my values lie in respect, integrity and teamwork which have been grounded in my rugby career. I also believe growth, and lifelong learning are essential.

What is your greatest achievement outside of work?

It would have to be being selected as Captain of Rugby School’s first XV. It is such a historic honour. Achieving a first class in my degree would be a close second.

What is the greatest book you have ever read that helped you in your career?

Without a doubt it has to be Shoe Dog. I could not put it down. An inspiring journey; beautifully written.

What is your most valuable asset of being a NextGen Planners member?

The community. What’s so special about it is that there is so much diversity, in age, race, gender etc etc but everyone has a pay it forward mindset. There are no silly questions. And certainly no judgement for asking one.

(Only answer this one if you truly want to…) Who is your favourite NextGen Planners member?

Rohan. For a few reasons. Without him this community wouldn’t exist, he embodies the values of paying it forward and in addition he supports and pushes each member to be the best person they can be.
