What is your name?
Oliver Bourke
What is your occupation?
I spend my time leading a team of professionals, dreaming of what the future should look like and devising a strategy to get there.
I also sit on the board of an Independent Fostering Agency with the objective of disrupting the care system, to give children a better start on their journey.
Where do you live?
Split between the beautiful countryside of North Yorkshire and the bustling streets of Central London.
When did you start your career in finance? How did you get into it?
At 11 years old. I used to be responsible for reading my father’s pager on the morning on the way to school with the closing values of the US stock markets. I placed my first investment by the age of 16 (under supervision!) with the total sum of all the pocket money I had ever received.
Finally, at the age of 20, I joined Transact to start my financial services career, on an unpaid work experience agreement for two weeks…. I stayed for five years.
BUSINESS OWNERS ONLY: If you could start your business again, what would you do differently?
I joined an established business but have helped reimagine its purpose. With the benefit of the learnings and experiences I’ve had to date, I’d have a leadership partner much earlier in the process, to help you focus on and execute the small steps as well as the big ones.
What would be your biggest piece of advice to someone coming into the financial planning profession?
Realise the responsibility you have, when working with your clients.
How would you define your personal mission?
To help people experience a fulfilling life, whatever that may look like to them
How would you define your personal vision?
Enjoy what you’re doing and make the most of it
How would you define your personal values?
Family – both those you choose and those by blood
Honesty – big one for me, otherwise I can’t develop trust
Determination – giving my best to everything that I do
Humour – might as well laugh along the way
What is your greatest achievement outside of work?
Being a husband to my wife…. Who is many levels better looking and more intelligent than me 😉
What is the greatest book you have ever read that helped you in your career?
I love to read, I have many leather-bound books….
Simon Sinek – Start with Why. It is a great foundational thought process for everything that you do.
What is your most valuable asset of being a NextGen Planners member?
Feeling part of something where people share similar passion to develop a nascent profession
(Only answer this one if you truly want to…) Who is your favourite NextGen Planners member?
Marcus Farnfield… big fan!
